Cursive: A Chess Set

The winner of Marbles: The Brain Store’s 2015’s “Make Your Move” design contest, Cursive reduces its pieces to extreme simplicity, while ensuring that their places on the board are unambiguous.

Crafted from simple, fluent contours.

The pieces do away with superfluous ornamentation while retaining distinct forms that make their roles on the board clear.

Intended for eyes and hands.

Designed for fabrication in phenolic resin–the same material of which modern billiard balls are made–the pieces yield a satisfying weight, with more warmth and waxier luster than stone.

"The Cursive Chess Set is elegant and minimalist - yet very expressive. Every decorative element serves a communicative purpose. The pieces shapes are inviting to touch, and give haptic clues to the status of the pieces within the hierarchical world of chess. Brain and beauty - what more could you want in a chess set?" - The Brain Workshop
